Known for its laid-back Italian charm, limestone cliffs and lemon groves, the Amalfi Coast is one of Europe’s most breathtaking coastlines. Whether you are looking to explore the Amalfi’s beaches, villas in Amalfi or to simply sit back with a refreshing limencello, we take a look at a few of the region’s highlights.
Where to Visit: Pompeii
The once-buried town of Pompeii is Europe’s most remarkable archeological site and offers visitors a glimpse into Roman Life nearly two thousand years ago. A short drive away, the now relatively quiet Mount Vesuvius volcano is open to visitors and offers an incredible vantage point on a clear day. Travel Tip: pack a sweater and walking shoes for the 30-minute walk from the road to the crater on Vesuvius’ windswept summit.
Back on the coast, the charming pastel and terracotta towns of Sorrento and Positano (pictured, top) are the perfect place to take a dip in the sea or enjoy a delicious Italian meal. And of course, no trip to the Amalfi Coast would be complete without a visit to Capri, and its famous, if sometimes crowded, Blue Grotto.
What to Sip: Limoncello
Limoncello, a sunny yellow liqueur made with the zest of Sorrento lemons, is an Amalfi Coast specialty. A delicious after-dinner drink, this sweet citrus beverage is best enjoyed ice cold. While limoncello is made from only four ingredients (lemon zest, vodka, sugar and water) the exact recipe is always a closely guarded family secret, adding to the fun of sampling different versions during your holiday.
